Fiumicino
From Fiumicino airport to Ostia by taxi or public transport, tips for arrivals and departures, and what to see in Fiumicino: the canal harbour, the imperial ports and the Ship Museum.
Rome’s international airport, Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino (FCO), is just a few kilometres from Ostia: much closer to us than to central Rome. It is one of the perks of staying by the sea, especially on the first and last day of your trip.
From the airport to Ostia
- Taxi: the easiest option, especially with luggage. The ride takes about 20 minutes without traffic. Only take a taxi from the official rank outside Arrivals (white cars marked TAXI) and ask the driver for an estimate before you set off.
- Transfer or private driver: booked in advance, the driver waits for you at Arrivals. Convenient for groups, families or late-evening arrivals.
- Train + Roma–Lido: from the airport the FL1 regional train (not the Leonardo Express, which runs non-stop to Termini) goes to Roma Ostiense; from there walk to Porta San Paolo station and take the Roma–Lido to Ostia. It is the cheapest option but takes about an hour and a half, with a change while carrying your luggage.
- Bus: Cotral buses connect Ostia with Fiumicino town; with suitcases they are less practical for the airport.
Late arrival or early departure
- Self check-in means you can arrive late in the evening too: tell us your flight time and, after online check-in and a short video-call identification, we will send you all the instructions.
- For early-morning flights, being close to the airport is a big advantage: book your taxi the evening before.
- Check-out is by 11:00 a.m. If your flight is in the afternoon, ask us: whenever possible we will help with a later departure.
What to see in Fiumicino
- The canal harbour: the heart of the town, with fishing boats moored along the canal. Fiumicino is famous among Romans for its seafood restaurants, with fish straight off the boats. Our favourite is Al Molo – Bastianelli (Via della Torre Clementina 312), with a terrace over the sea at the end of the pier, perfect for a sunset dinner, even on your last evening before the flight.
- The Imperial Ports of Claudius and Trajan: the remains of ancient Rome’s great harbours, with Trajan’s hexagonal basin. They are part of the Ostia Antica Archaeological Park: check opening times before you go.
- The Necropolis of Portus at Isola Sacra: Roman tombs decorated with mosaics and inscriptions, little known and very atmospheric.
- The Ship Museum (Museo delle Navi), near the airport, with Roman boats found during the harbour excavations.
- Fregene, further north: beaches and beach clubs much loved by Romans, ideal for lunch by the sea.
Fiumicino is about 15–20 minutes from Ostia by car or taxi.
